If you are interested in modern Russia today, I think that you have to be familiar with two things: Joseph Stalin and the Russian czars. You need to understand the concept of autocracy and autocratic rule. An obvious beef that Putin has with Lenin is basically carving up the Russian Empire. And he thinks that ultimately states don't matter because we're going to transition from capitalism to this weird, stateless, communistic world order.
