Trade Between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean

The Roman desire for trade along the Indian Ocean was fueled by a much larger population of wealthy aristocrats and later emperors. Over 250 million cisteris would be deposited each year into imperial coffers by the mid-first century AD out of a total value of 1 billion. A large deposit of treasures found at the former Kushan capital of Bagram in Afghanistan reflect the Kushan's cosmopolitan taste for luxury goods.
