How Do Time Constants Affect a Healthy Subject?
Air flow during passive exhalation is determined by the respiratory system resistance and compliance. In a relaxed healthy subject, expired gas from the lungs will flow at rates that are well approximated by a single exponential function. After five time constants have passed, 99% of the air to be exhaled will have been exhaled.
