The Problem of Causation
Avison, as philosophical theology, commits us to the idea that god's relationship to the world is necessary. And it comes up again towards the end of the incoherence when gazali takes up the topic of miracles. The reason why it reminds people of david hume is that he then says we expect the fire to burn the cotton and we have this very strong impression that it must burn the cotton. But that's just an expectation that's been created by our experience. It doesn't necessarily mean that the cotton will burn.
