The Week in Art

CHAPTER

Vermeer and Maria Tins

1653 is a seminal year in the life of Vermeer. He's accepted into a guild and married his Catholic mother-in-law Katarina Bolenes. She was from a wealthy patrician family but also had some reservations about her daughter marrying Johannes familia, an artist who wasn't even a master at that time. We don't know exactly what were the reasons why she didn't want him to marry Katerina because he was lower ranking than her. But Maria tinselilla may do hint at how artistic skills have come across this extraordinary or mythic world we live in today.
