A neurotransmitter is a molecule in the nervous system that helps neurons communicate with each other. Monoamine transmitters include dopamine, neuropinephrine and serotonin. Serotonin being the main one that gets a lot of attention but monoamine transmitters are all related to each other. The theory of the monoamine hypothesis is that reduced activity of these monoamines,. particularly serotonin is a significant factor of the onset of depression. If you have too little serotonin or your serotonin is insufficiently active then that contributes to depressive symptoms or the onset of Depression.
