The Failure of Housing Politics
Housing politics has kind of arrived, right? Which is why the policies you get don't actually do anything and just sort of pour petrol onto the fire. This is one of the government's arguments against the Greens rental freeze idea that this would have perverse effects in the market. But I think it's a clever strategy - politically powerful but my real concern is for young people who are locked out of homeownership because it seems so unrealistic. And they now have a political party saying, we represent you, we're going to be the party of renders. We need to move beyond that...I'm fearful of policies that could make this sound good that could end up making things worse.
