There is an extinction event that has now been described at least primarily on rocks and fossils around Whitby. It kind of comes back to some of the basic tenets of geology, I suppose. You need to look at what's going on now to have a chance of understanding what's happening in deep time. But by looking at what's happened in the past, you can then look to the future as well.
