The Illusion of a Permanent Self
The sense of a real permanent self inside your skull is an illusion. It's the product of incessant inner dialogue of nonstop mental chatter, he says. The ego strives to prop up all manner of defense mechanisms in order to protect itself from change and decay - but it can't fathom its own annihilation at death. For some, this sense of a separate self is absolutely torturous. In short, this illusion makes us suffer.
