The novel has this, you know, 1950s fixation on thermonuclear war. That aspect of it did not feel dated at all as I was reading it this past week. The history there is that Walter Miller served as a tail gunner on a bomber in World War II. And one of the combat sorties that they flew was bombingthis monastery yet.
