The History of Wild Rice in South Asia
Rice was domesticated along the Yangtze River in China and possibly a bit to the north of there as well starting early in the Neolithic. The rice we're talking about around the Ganges belonged to a different subspecies and it had its own complex history. Mung bean, eard bean and horse graham were the most important of these along with varieties of millet that grew locally. These crops ended up being essential to the development of the Indus Valley civilization and later agricultural societies in South Asia.
