The episode about him passing as a girl, the one that we're quoting here, comes to us from a much later source. That passage sounds like he doesn't know. But maybe he does. I've read it in other places that he does know. And both the classical greeks and this later roman source might have had their own axes to grind,. i mean, there's a lot of layers here, and it is kind of hard to unparse.
