Tension between trying to make this a legal process and those who want to mete out rough justice. Can you actually provide justice, some level of fairness to your enemies? And that was by no means a foregone conclusion. The idea that we would extend something as basic as the golden rule to our enemies in war took doing. This trial ended up playing this pivotal role in identifying individual human rights, human dignity, the right to a fair trial, as something that is shared by all.
