The Rise of the Teutonic Order in the Middle East
When the Ayyabid Sultan Saladin conquered Jerusalem in 1187 it sparked a Christian crusade against him which we now call the Third Crusade. The establishment of monastic orders that aided the poor and sick occurred soon afterwards. These Orders were called the Knights Hospitala and the Knights Templar. Over the course of the 12th century those resident states in the Middle East began to strike back at the crusader states. In fact the Teutonic Order was in high demand from Christian states all over Europe combating their ideological enemies. They would be called the Order of Brothers of the German House of St Mary in Jerusalem but are more commonly known as the TeUTonic Order.
