The brain is selective about which bits of information get its full attention. Even though we don't pay attention to some things, they are being received by our senses and processed at some level outside sort of direct conscious awareness. In 2014, Thomas Canning survived a major stroke at the age of 32. After being in a coma for several weeks, he made a remarkable recovery. He told us he was left with some curious symptoms including an inability to notice his wife's face when she had one eye on the right. Tom says as long as you're aware, the brain is going on here? Well not me. I always keep my eyes wide open. You're lucky. Yeah.
