The Sovereign Has a Business in Taking Cognizance of Such of the Opinions as Refer to the State
Rousseau argues that the sovereign has a right to take cognizance of people's opinions. But he says they should not be treated as religious dogmas, but social sentiments without which man cannot be good citizen or faithful subject. And i'm going to continue arguing how this stuff starts to go awry as it becomes more and more detached from its religious roots. You can believe and even say all sorts of things about angels and demons and whatever, but you cannot say or act as if there is no god.
