Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist Isabel Wilkerson grew up in Washington, D.C., surrounded by people whose parents or grandparents had all come up from the South. Her family's story was a migration story, the story of millions of African Americans who had left the South. "This was like a passport for themselves to document their having arrived," she says.
