Vanderbilt just looked for opportunity and didn't really it didn't matter if he wasn't in that business if he thought he could make money. He was going through direct competition with this boat called a legislator and he's piloting a boat called a thistle so they'd race not only would they compete on price but they compete on how fast they could get their launching them to the end destination. On September 3rd Vanderbilt won the race in New York as the thistle turned up to the pier that was used by both vessels, ordered his deck hands to tie up in the middle leaving no room for the enraged fisher.
