Raskolnikov is a provincial, we're going to just call him bourgeois or middle class person. His parents had to go through some great difficulty to put him through college. So this guy was not a destitute street, you know, urchin. He sees it that St. Petersburg was like the most rapidly modernized city in the world ever at that point. And he eventually falls into her, his arms and has this religious revelation.
