The cities were visited often by chinese travellers and diplomats. They had massive markets supplying all kinds of food, spices, cloth, precious stones like jade. The caravans were supported by so called caravanseri which are sort of fortified inns or hostiles. People could go to an or buddhist shrines and worship at these caravanserai. So the trans oxionian cities were, again, multi religious, buddhist, zoroastrian, nestorian, christian as well as worshipping local gods.
