One of the foundations of bible study is understanding the bible's context. If we want to understand the bible on its own terms, we have to understand the world in which it was written. The way that jesus speaks in the bible and the ways that he interacts with people in the bible doesn't come from nowhere. His ideas and his interactions were influenced by his context, which has a history.
