Vermeer special: the man, the show and an attribution debate

The Week in Art

CHAPTER

Introduction

An unprecedented 28 of the 37 Vermeer paintings still in existence are gathered at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Gregor Weber, one of the curators, tells me about his new book which reveals the depth of influence of the Jesuits and Catholicism on Vermeer. Plus we have a little cameo from the artist Alvaro Barrington who happened to be walking around the exhibition when I saw it and he tells us what he makes of Vermeer today. The Week in Art is sponsored by Christie's. Visit Christie's.com to find out more about the world's leading auction house since 1766.
