The Screaming of Ivan Iliyich
Ivan Iliyich was diagnosed with a vermiform appendix. His wife asked him to take communion, but he said it would be unnecessary. He received the sacrament with tears in his eyes and felt hope that he might live. But soon after thinking of an operation woke up his doubts again. The screaming began for three days; one could hear it through two closed doors without horror.
