The army Napoleon entered in 1785 was a conservative, static and more interested in pinching pennies than winning glory. This state of affairs suited the common soldiers and senior officers just fine, but junior officers typically prayed for war. His family situation meant he faced additional challenges: Mainly, he was broke. He put up a brave face to his fellow officers, but his personal letters show he stressed endlessly about money.
