The Darwinian Story of Creation
Evangelical Christians saw Darwinism in much the same way that many atheists see it today as a kind of defeater to what they understood to be the biblical view of creation. According to this account, God created the universe in six literal days. And on each day, following the first, He added to his creation what He had brought into being the prior day. So if you accept that and you create institutions to sort of protect and defend this particular account, what you get is institutions that include statements of faith faculty are required to agree to in order to teach there.
