The hapsburgs were originally swiss. They started out as the counts of hapsburg rulin, a sort of small fifdom in northern switzerland. In 12 74, some one in the area proclaimed them and gave them the honorary title of king of the romans. And they took up this title to assert their supremacy over that limited region. Not long after, in 12 82, they were able to obtain rule over duchy of austria.
