When I look at opinion polls on particular issues, most Americans are pretty reasonable, even on really contested questions like abortion. Why is it that on issue after issue after issue, what average Americans believe is actually pretty reasonable and yet political parties don't seem to cater for that? It probably has something to do with the religiosity of America. The fact that the left has for as long as there's been a country has been in opposition to some version of theocracy. We have really grotesque spectacle of evangelical Christians joining a obviously unChristian personality cult so as to ram through their theocratic agenda.
