Fontenell and saintevrimant, voltaire and lametri thought that man was hopelessly jealous, envious, wicked, corrupt and weak. Some eminent doctrinares of the enlightenment believed in the immortality of the soul. And unless men could be trained to obey experts, as they experts in those techniques which clearly need them, life on earth would continue to be a jungle.
