When Does the Black Legend Begin?

A reasonable understanding of the inquisition places it in its time and place where virtually every court on earth would have used torture. Execution would have been much more common. The worst that's like they happen is a strongly worded letter. But we should also point outside that the trying and torturing and executing of heretics is not a Catholic preserve. It was done in England as well. So the Black legend really kicks in in the 19th century.
