The Stoics' Argument for Habit Formation
A habit isn't formed overnight or in a week, it takes time and it takes human time. And so we're being bombarded with arguments not to practice forming habits. But the Stoics were very practical in that they wanted to know what was under their control and what was outside their control. The way to answer that was to get clear on what is appropriate and congruent to human nature. It can't be the same as a bat. Let's just put that down axiomatically. A bat that flies. If it is, then already we're starting off on the wrong foot. We can't begin to have an intelligible conversation about appropriate habits. There's no hierarchy
