There's always the possibility that we're not looking at the situation correctly. It's very difficult to determine what constitutes truth from a scientific perspective. If you can detect something using multiple measurements, then it's there. Same idea emerged in psychology, though the psychologist came up with a terrible term for it, was multi-method, multi-matrix construct validation.
