The Importance of Commitment in Philosophy

There's an element of deep existential commitment in genuine philosophizing. Martin Heidegger writes very beautifully about questioning, questioning as saying yes to that which we haven't mastered. So when we question we're exposing ourselves to the realm of something that is compelling. It draws us forward. But it can only do that if we've committed to pursuing the question. And so we have to be clear that those are two different attitudes towards philosophy - one protects oneself and the other transforms oneself.
