mediums can affect so many aspects of the paint. flow off the brush how fluid you want your paint versus how thick you would prefer it Most mediums are going to impart some level of transparency to the paint as well if you do have an opaque color and you just want to make it a little more transparent mediums can help in that regard. They also change the gloss level of a paint in general most oils increase gloss now If that's a problem for someone we do have a wax medium that's the ticket there which can reduce gloss.
