To get the top spot in fiction during a competitive month, on the new york times, you need probably a hundred and 20 thousand copies in a week. The list is a measure of momentum, not a measure of total sales,. This is why it's totally valid that you would want to hit the list. As your name gg grows, more people front load. More chenanigans happen in non fiction. There are more people who have platforms and know how to use them. It's all this is what your readers af your your viewer should keep in mind. Best seller is a marketing term, and it is like a map marking mine, but when it's working right,
Brandon Sanderson is my favourite author of all time. He writes incredible fantasy books, including Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, and wrote the final 3 books of The Wheel of Time. Brandon's output is legendary - he writes books almost faster than we can read them, and he teaches creative writing at Brigham Young University. I recorded this episode with Brandon as a live stream during the 2020 lockdown, and because it was one of my favourites I wanted to share it with you again as a bonus episode.
In the conversation, we discuss how he kept going when his writing wasnโt being read, the question of originality and how we can make the stuff we need to do (work) more fun. Enjoy!
