Nick Gabaldon: A Black Surfer's Story
Nick Gabaldon was a well-known black surfer in the Golden Age of surfing. In 1951, he drowned after paddling 12 miles to surf at Malibu's Santa Monica Beach. He is one of the first documented African-American and Mexican surfers. "He didn't just plunge into the Malibu scene. He just wanted to surf," says friend Vicki Flaxman.
