There were a lot of monks in egypt, ye. There were these desert fathers, but maybe he made monking cool. In the west he did. It gave it a particular flavor. A monk who lived on top of a pillar. I saw a picture that a friend of mine posted way back when i used to be on facebook. This is from about 18 80 or something. And what it was was the ruins of the old civilization. So the old temples, people just climb on top of these pillars and live amongst the ruins,. They're odd people.
