The modern day Zionist movement really begins in the late 19th century. The first wave of immigration to this land is in the 1880s with the Pragroms in Russia. In 1917, November 2nd, 1917, Britain issues a declaration declaring its support for a Jewish national home in Palestine. And there has been a raucous debate ever since about what that means.
