The New York City of the 1970s and 80s

In 1984, four young men were shot by a man named Bernie gets on the subway. He claimed they had been trying to steal money from him and took matters into his own hands. No one really knows exactly what went down because there weren't many cell phones at the time. In Deathwish, he goes around taking revenge basically on the city's hoodlums.
