Social desirability bias is one of the most neglected, enlightening concepts in all psychology. It says this, when the truth sounds bad, people lie and when lies become ubiquitous enough, people often start to sincerely believe absurdities because they just don't hear anything else. Now, for a long time in our society, it sounds really good to say that you're doing anything about racism or sexism,. which means that anything that goes against that tends to sound bad no matter how truthful or reasonable it may be.
