The Buddha's Life and Teachings

Early writings about the Buddha and his teachings are contained in the Pali Canon. As with the Upanishads and other ancient Indian texts, we're dealing with an originally oral tradition here which was set down in writing only centuries after the Buddha's lifetime. His sayings and conversations are collected in the works called Nikayas - one of three bodies of early Buddhist literature known as the Thripitaka.
