The idea that we're building agents that have fixed objectives is just the wrong way to think about AI. The bounded optimality idea is how could we replace perfect rationality with something that's actually achievable, but is still sort of theoretically well-defined? And so it makes sense to think of AI as how do we design these bounded optimal programs.
