The mayflower is not the first a ship that has landed in the area. The first ship was a few years earlier. So ships have been coming for a long, long time by this point. But the most recent wave of ships was only a few years before and it absolutely decimated the native american population. About 90 % of the opulation of native americans in that area had died bya 16 19. And so they land in their new home with no knowledge of how to work the land or even what faith they were practising.
