The Views of Robert E. Lee on Slavery
Robert E. Lee thought slavery was an evil institution, and he uses that word, evil. He actually thought it was worse for whites than for the slaves themselves. When George Washington's adopted son dies in 1857, he leaves a will naming Robert E. Lee as executor of his estate. That estate still includes slaves who had descended from Mount Vernon.
