The Evolution of Search Engines

It wasn't until 1995, in fact, that individuals were even allowed to register their own domain names. Most of the early websites had to be published wherever they could and piggybacking on existing academic or corporate sites. The inscrutability of these early URLs combined with the web's vastness and anonymity to present a tree falling in the woods sort of problem. Search engines and search sites would become the most popular and most important early websites.
