Introduction
In 2019, the Narendra Modi government passed a constitutional amendment bill that reserved 10% of seats in the open category. Unlike previous quotas, this one was not on the basis of caste but economic status. The 10% EWS quota, as it came to be known, was then challenged in the Supreme Court. On Monday, the 7th of November, three judges out of a five-judge bench, upheld the quota and said it didn't violate the constitution.
