Severus Alexander was not confident in standing up to the military. He didn't seem to have that kind of background or thought. But he does actually lead to campaigns in person. So I don't think we should underestimate him. There is certainly this tradition that he's at the mercy of the Petorian Guard in Rome. And it may have been that he was prevented from taking a more active role during his youth by Mamiya.
