Is There a White Europe?
The kind of imagined whiteness of Europe is one of the great scourges of history as it stands. We imagine Tudor England, for example, as a place of white people in ruffs and cod pieces - we don't see black people or Indigenous people who may have been present. There's been some really interesting discussion around the new Yellowstone documentary that Kevin Costner did because he's also in that TV programme about Yellowstone. And places like Yellowstone, these national parks which are created as ideas of wildness, of wilderness, of open landscapes, they actually remove the Indigenous people from those lands to create the national parks. So I think for most people, it isn't a conscious forgetting
