Pizarro's Capture of Atahalpa
Pizarro would famously keep atahalpa as his prisoner until an adequate ransom could be provided. The spanish ambush had been so surprising and so shocking in its ferocity that the conquistidors never faced any opposition from the army waiting league away outside of the city. Despite the fact that they had the spaniards hugely outnumbered, the rattled incan forces instead chose to flee. They never entered the city, and they never ged what was still a mysterious enemy.
