Vespacean inherited a short-lived, but arguably more serious revolt and gall. Local tribal leaders were not about to miss their opportunity to break away from Roman rule. The Batavians had long enjoyed exemption from taxation in exchange for providing a disproportionate share of the auxiliary troops stationed along the Rhine. When Vitellius ascended to the throne, his agents pressed the Batavians to contribute even more troops to help reinforce the Rhines.
