Garry steingart is one of my favorite novelists, described by the new yorker as the finest satirist writing in the united states at the moment. He was born in lenengrad 19 72 and moved to dolkey when he was eight years old. The back story is actually food related, because russia and the soviet union in the seventies had a series of bad wheat harvests,. And so they had a programme that was unofficially titled jews for grain - where America would send millions of tons of grain while Russia sent hundreds of thousands of jews.
